Gondola shelving (such as those offered by Continental Store Fixtures Inc.) is a beautiful way to add class to your home, whether installed in a child's messy bedroom or a cluttered bathroom. The best type of gondola shelving is the type you make yourself with some of your favorite pieces.

Materials

  1. Shelves- You can find amazing pieces to use as the bottom shelving pieces at your local dump, super market, or secondhand store. The important thing is that you enjoy the pieces. You can use pieces of glass, wood, or broken down pieces of other furniture, depending upon your comfort level.
  2. Bolts- Lag bolts should work best in order to mount your shelving to the wall.
  3. Totes- These are the pieces you will use to connect the shelving pieces. Totes work best with sturdy wood that will be able to withstand the pressure and weight of whatever items you will be placing on the shelves. However, if you are simply using the shelving for light bathroom supplies, it is fun to get creative with your totes by gluing small pieces together. You can use rocks, crystals, or plastic.

Instructions

  1. You will need to put your totes together if you opt out of the easier wood version. You will need to play with the materials to see what works best, but super glue is tried and true with almost any material. Make sure you let your totes dry for 24 hours before you attempt to put any weight on them.
  2. Next, you will need to bolt the shelves to the totes. If your shelving pieces and totes are made of wood, you can simply use nails to connect the two. Start from the bottom shelf, or largest piece, then move your way up. If you are using an abstract material, using a large amount of super glue should work well.
  3. Lastly you will need to bolt the shelving to the wall. Buy a set of four 1/2 lag bolts, also known as lag screws. Use a drill to mount the pieces of lumber to the wall by again starting at the bottom shelf. Go from underneath the bottom shelf and drill directly into the wall. Then, move over to the other side of the pieces of lumber and do the same thing again. Finally, move to the top shelf and drill two bolts into either side of the shelving.

Maintenance

The best way to keep your shelving looking great is to apply a clear wood coat to any wooden pieces.
